How much would you put yourself through in the name of love? If you know your genes could potentially hold an unfortunate future for your child would you still have any? Does love justify incestry? In life everyone loves at least one person, whether it be a mom, husband, daughter, or even God but what is love, and how are you willing sacrifice to prove your love? Love is an abstract meaning which can be intimidating due to its lack of concreteness and instructions. What these short stories have in common is that they all have love as an underlying theme. Butler’s short stories, Bloodchild, The Evening and The Morning and The Night, and Near of Kin, Butler explores the consequences and meaning of love, how our genes, something we cannot change, but can determine whether or not we have the life that we want, and lastly incestry in an attempt to overcome an uncertainty she may have with love.
